WRITING AID & INFORMATION SHEET

"THE GREATEST INVENTIONS SINCE THE PENCIL" is the way one teacher described the GRIP-RITE PEN AND PENCIL GRIPPER. "THE THING THAT MAKES CHILDREN GRIP THEIR PENCIL PROPERLY" are the words another teacher used when asking for it at her Teacher’s Supply Store.

It was developed by a parent to solve his son’s writing problems, and it worked so well the parent made them available to help your children.

Perhaps one of the reasons why so many children have writing problems is that pencils aren’t made with fingers in mind. The child should grip the pencil gently with thumb, index finger and middle finger. The child gets the most tactile feedback when it is held in this manner and the pencil acts as an extension of the index finger (Fig. 1)

But, three sides form a triangle and most pencils are round or hexagonal. A round peg just doesn’t fit easily, comfortable or efficiently into a triangular hole. So, the child compensates. He grips the pencil at its cone-shaped tip so tightly that his knuckles turn white, or he tucks his thumb under his index finger and forms a vice-like grip, or he places his index finger higher on the pencil and invites the ring finger to join into a four finger clamp (Fig 2). But fatigue enters quickly and penmanship deteriorates.

The solution: a triangle adapter. Three cushiony outer edges provide the perfect gripping surface while a center hole accommodates the pencil.

You will soon discover that children will write better and longer with less effort and more comfort with the Hoyle Grip-Rite Gripper. Writer’s "humps" will disappear and pencils won’t roll off the desk (Fig 3).

The Gripper should be treaded on the pencil to about three-fourths of an inch to an inch from the pencil point. If the Gripper is placed too close to the tip, it may interfere with the child’s writing. If it is placed excessively high on the pencil, the child may be tempted to resort to his old gripping habits.

You should be able to insert the Gripper on most pencils very easily, simply by holding the Gripper in one hand and pushing the pencil through the hole to the desired position with the other. To sharpen the pencil, simply slide the Gripper toward the eraser end, sharpen the pencil and then reposition (Fig 4).

NEW!! Hoyle now makes grippers in 7 sizes. The standard size fits most round and hexagon pencils and pens. The Super-Grip fits primary pencils and large ball point pens. Many teachers have requested the larger size grips because the larger size pencil and larger grip give the necessary bulk for children with motor difficulties. The Super-Grip also fits most crayons and chalk, giving the child a better grip on them and preventing breakage.

THE GRIPPERS COME IN ASSORTED SIZES. THEY ARE NON-TOXIC.
